Q: Should I pay for my credit report?

I googled this question. The top FOUR results were ads, linking me to companies that would happily sell me my credit report for a small fee. Really? They want me to use credit to see information about my credit. Now, that’s irony!

While it is important to know what your credit history looks like, SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Get your FREE credit report at annualcreditreport.com. It’s easy and completely free. This website provides you access to one free report per year from each of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian or TransUnion). 

Reviewing your credit report at least once a year, even if you’re not trying to obtain a new loan is a good habit to start. By viewing your report at least annually, you can identify any mistakes and fix them, before you lose or destroy information necessary to dispute the issue. Looking at your report at least once a year also ensures you have not been the victim (or your credit profile at least) of identity theft.

If you see mistakes, don't ignore them. To dispute information on your report, go to one of the bureau's (Equifax, Experian or TransUnion) websites and dispute the wrong information. While each bureau's website is a little different, filing a dispute is the same basic process. Just find the "Dispute info on your credit report" or similar link and follow the directions provided. You only need to dispute the incorrect information to one of the bureaus as each bureau has a duty to forward the corrected data to the others.
